How to Rank in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews Without Two Separate Plans

How to rank in ChatGPT and how to show up in Google AI Overviews are closer questions than most owners expect. Both reward pages that can be crawled, that answer a question directly and that a machine can trust, so one well-built page can serve both.
The differences are mostly about access and measurement, not about writing. This guide covers what Google says about its AI features, what OpenAI says about ChatGPT search, and where to spend your first hours.
What Google says it takes to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google has been unusually direct about this. Its guide to AI features and your website says that to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." It adds that there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed.
The same page says you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in these features. If someone is selling you an "AI file" as the key to Google's AI answers, Google's own documentation says otherwise.
Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response. In plain terms, one question from a customer can trigger several searches behind the scenes. A site that covers the related sub-questions well has more chances to be pulled in.
How to rank in ChatGPT: the access piece is different
ChatGPT runs its own crawler for search. OpenAI's crawler documentation states that "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. It also notes it can take about 24 hours for OpenAI's systems to adjust after you change robots.txt.
That means a site can be fully visible to Google and invisible to ChatGPT search, simply because a firewall or robots.txt rule blocks OpenAI's bot. It's worth checking both.
Side by side
| Question | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | ChatGPT search |
|---|---|---|
| Which crawler needs access? | Googlebot, through normal Search indexing | OAI-SearchBot |
| Is a special file or markup required? | No, per Google's AI features guide | Allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt is what OpenAI recommends |
| How is the source shown? | As a supporting link in the AI response | As a citation attached to the answer |
| Where do you check it? | Search results for your target questions | ChatGPT, by asking your target questions |
The content work sits under both columns. A page that answers the question in its opening lines, uses clear headings and cites real sources is a good candidate for either engine.
Why showing up inside the answer matters more now
The click patterns around AI answers are changing. The Pew Research Center tracked the Google browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. About 18% of the searches in that data produced an AI summary.
When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% of visits when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits.
For a local or professional-services business, the lesson is uncomfortable but useful. Ranking on the first page is worth less when a summary sits above it and answers the question. Being named inside that summary, or inside a ChatGPT answer, is where the buyer's attention is.
One page, built for both
Here is what a page looks like when it's built to work in Google's AI features and in ChatGPT at the same time.
Answer first
Put the direct answer in the first two sentences. Both engines lift passages. If your answer is in paragraph six, the engine has to work harder to use it, and a competitor's page may be easier.
Cover the follow-up questions
Because of query fan-out, think about the three or four questions a buyer asks right after the first one. What does it cost? How long does it take? What should I check before I hire someone? Answer them on the same page under their own headings, or link to pages that do.
Keep it in text
Google's guide lists keeping important content in textual form among its recommended practices. Prices, service areas, hours and credentials trapped inside images or PDFs are harder for any crawler to use.
Keep business facts consistent
Google also recommends keeping structured data and business information accurate. Your name, address, phone number and services should match across your site and your Google Business Profile. Conflicting details give any engine a reason to hedge.
Cite real sources
Link to the agency, trade body or study behind any fact you state. It helps the reader and gives the engine something to verify against.
How to rank in ChatGPT and AI Overviews: what to do this week
- Search your top three customer questions on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears and who is cited.
- Ask the same questions in ChatGPT with search on and note who is cited.
- Check robots.txt and your firewall for rules that block Googlebot or OAI-SearchBot.
- Rewrite the page closest to a sale so the answer is in the first two sentences.
Tracking this by hand works for a handful of questions. It gets tedious across dozens of questions and several engines. If you'd like a baseline without doing it yourself, a ChatGPT visibility audit shows where you appear today and what to fix.
FAQ
Do I need a separate strategy for AI Overviews and ChatGPT?
Mostly no. The content that works is the same: direct answers, clear headings, sourced facts. The difference is access, since Google uses its normal Search index and ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot.
Does Google require special schema or an AI text file for AI Overviews?
No. Google's AI features guide says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup are needed. Accurate structured data is still recommended as general good practice.
Will appearing in an AI Overview bring me traffic?
It may bring less than a classic top result did. In Pew's March 2025 data, users clicked a link inside the AI summary in 1% of visits. The value is in being named when the buyer reads the answer.
Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
They are separate features, but Google's guide lists the same eligibility requirement for both: the page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
If you're working out how to rank in ChatGPT, start with the work that also earns a place in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: open access to both crawlers, answer first, cover the follow-ups and cite your facts.
